Ministry Focus

Who God has called us to reach
We believe that God has impressed upon our hearts to target the North Tukwila, Washington area.
Additionally, we believe that the area is ripe for a church plant such as, the “Oaks”.  Often the social ills
facing Tukwila are overshadowed by those in the nearby Rainier Valley area of Seattle, but Tukwila
faces some unique challenges of its own.  An article in a November 2003, Seattle Times states that,
“People often associate Tukwila School District with having one of King County's most diverse and
poorest student bodies.” The Tukwila City Council as recognized the following areas of need in Tukwila:

·        The elderly
·        Refugees
·        Children
·        Domestic Violence
·        Substance abusers
·        Mental Illness

Tukwila also boast one of the highest percentages of crime per capita in King County. Tukwila lies in
South King County and is one of areas that has the highest concentrations of working poor in
Washington State along with Snohomish County. The area faces many families with multiple problems
requiring services from several sources. There is both a growing Youth and Immigrant population, and a
great diversity of languages spoken in the city.

How God has called us to reach them
We exist to serve the city of Tukwila, beginning in the Foster, Riverton, and Boulevard Park
neighborhoods. Because we seek to be a church for the community, our programs and ministries must
focus first on meeting the particular needs of the people in our community. We will have a strong youth,
children and family focus. House of Oaks Ministries is thus named to avoid the use of the word “church”
being associated with its facility.  We intend to have a multi-purpose facility where ministry and ministry
training takes place. Our resources will be focused toward outreach.  Instead of people coming to a
place called church, we will send the people that compose the church to people where they are, i.e.,
schools, community centers, homes, and on the streets.   The church is a spiritual body – not a physical
building.  We will produce servant-leaders that produce servant-leaders.  We will be entrepreneurial and
promote community development, and focus on education, substance abuse, individual and family
counseling. Our unique target ministry groups include:  Children, single parents, low income families,
drug dealers and addicts, prostitutes, and individuals that have strayed from the faith.
